Surfing the Internet and a "fun" Pairwork Writing Exercise

  • In this module we'll browse the WWW (world wide web), this will take us on a journey around the globe. We will save the URLs of interesting places by using the bookmark facility on the browser. As you surf around the web please make notes on what you thought about the sites and what makes a "good" site. We will share experiences in group discussions afterwards.

  • Our journey begins in Jerusalem. At the holiest place for the Jewish people - the Western or the Wailing Wall. The camera here is updated every minute. you can even put a prayer in the Wall. If you have time, take the tunnel tour.

  • Don't forget if you get lost you just need to click on the "back" button until you get back to this page or you can make a "bookmark" for this page. You do this by clicking on "bookmark" on the tool bar and then choosing "add bookmark". Whenever you want to get back to this page click on bookmark and you will see the page in the menu.
  • Now we're going south to Beersheba if you haven't ben here before try to work out how old the city is.

  • Now we'll visit the site called Anagrams. you write in your name and it gives you words and phrases using the same letters. Try it!

  • Now we move within seconds to the West Coast of the USA. We are now going to do a quiz on-line and get immediate results!
Once you get to Dave's ESL Cafe, choose the EFL QUIZ CENTER and choose any subject you like. Do the quiz and submit your results.

  • Now while we're talking about learning a language, go to the dictionary of sign language and find out how to sign the words "intelligent "and "fascinating"- just like your partners!
  • Let's get a quick update on what's going on in the world.
Go to CNN. See when the news was last updated. Is there any news from your area? (Sorry people in other parts of the world, in Israel we specialize in being in the news!) If so read it.
  • And now for some fun.
Let's visit Disney . Have a look around. Do you think this type of site is useful? Did you have to wait a long time for the page to download?

Our last stop is of course in Washington D.C.
Lets take a tour around the White House. Click on the room you would like to see.

  • We hope you enjoyed the journey! Now please join our discussion on "Surfing the Internet" . Click on your assigned group to reach the appropriate discussion group and give your impressions on surfing through the Internet. If you're not sure which group you belong to press here. and then go to the forums to start the discussions.

  • A fun pair work writing exercise
  • In module 1 we all wrote about ourselves, now we are going to write about our invisible partner! We are going to try and write a bio-poem which describes our partner.

This poem has a very simple structure, it's a 7-line poem, biographical in nature. (This idea was taken from pizzaz, persona poems and adapted to a pair work exercise for the ETTI course.)

To understand what this is all about let's read a sample bio-poem and note it's structure.

    Sample Persona-Poem

  • Kate.....
  • tall, energetic, happy, intelligent mother (daughter, friend, etc.) of Danny
  • who loves music, books and fresh air
  • who is afraid of President Bush, spiders and heights
  • who wants to see Latin America, the end of poverty and summer
  • resident of this moment
  • .....Thompson.
  • Actually if you look at the template below you will see that the poem requires certain information about the person, for example what they love what they are afraid of etc.
  • Title of Poem
  • Author's Name

_________________ .....(first name/s)

____________, ____________, _____________, ____________ ____________ of ____________

who loves ____________, ____________ and ____________

who is afraid of ____________, ____________ and ____________

who wants to see ____________, ____________ and ____________

resident of ____________

..... ________________. (last name)

  • Now comes the fun part!
  • You all have been given a partner to work with. You should read your partner's introduction to find out more about them (this might help you to fill in part of the bio-poem) then you will need to correspond with your partner to be able to complete the poem. (please send a cc. of all your correspondence to your on-line instructor) When you and your partner are pleased with the poem then publish it for us all to admire.
