Only a block from the White House and just a short walk from the nation’s historic Mall, the Corcoran stands as a major center of American art. It is a place where the past, present and future of the visual arts come to life -- the past in the museum’s extensive collection of American and European masterworks, the present in its ongoing exhibitions of contemporary art, and the future in the classrooms and studios of one of the most distinguished colleges of art and design in the country.

Do you want to know about the American history?

The National Museum of American History (NMAH) is devoted to collecting, preserving, and interpreting artifacts as a special class of historical evidence--and as principal expressions of human creativity. The Museum is interested in how objects are made, how they are used, how they express human needs and values, and how they influence society and the lives of individuals. NMAH's natural focus is on the history of the United States of America, including its roots and connections with other cultures.
As sources for research, the Museum offers the historical objects collected by its curatorial divisions, but also significant collections of oral histories, prints, photographs, business Americana and trade literature, and engineering drawings. NMAH also houses a notable research library and the Dibner Library of rare books in the history of science and technology
